The State of Washington, DC Admission Act (aka The New Columbia Admission Act)

The State of Washington, DC Admission Act (previously known as the New Columbia Admission Act) is the legislation which would grant DC residents the rights of full citizenship enjoyed by Americans living in the 50 states: Namely, full representation in the US House and US Senate, and a locally elected government free from Congressional interference. The bill defines the residential and commercial areas of the District of Columbia as the State of Washington, DC, a 51st state separated from the territory of the federal government (the revised District of Columbia).

You can see the text of the DC statehood bill in previous Congresses, along with FAQ, Summary and Map at the bottom of this page.

The New Columbia Admission Act (2013-2014)

In January of 2013, the New Columbia Admission Act, establishing the residential and commercial areas of the District of Columbia the State of New Columbia, was introduced in the House by DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and in the Senate by Senator Tom Carper of Delaware. Following a lobby day on July 15, 2014, followed days later by President Obama's statement in support of statehood, and a Senate Hearing on Statehood for DC on September 15, a large number of new cosponsors moved to endorse our bill. By the end of 113th Congress, a record number of cosponsors, 112 in the House and 21 in the Senate, announced their support for the New Columbia Admission Act.
